Document Apostille in Canada

Published on Thursday, January 25, 2018

It is common for a foreign authority to request that you apostille your Canadian documents. In order to do so, you need to find out what that means and how to go about it.

First, what is document Apostille?

Under the Hague Apostille Convention, signatory countries of this treaty have agreed to recognize public documents issued by other signatory countries, providing those documents are authenticated by the attachment of an internationally recognized form of authentication known as an “apostille” certificate. An apostille ensures that public documents that are issued in one signatory country, will be recognized in other signatory countries.

How can you get document apostille in Canada?

You may be surprised to know that the answer is, you can’t get an apostille certificate on a Canadian document. Canada is not a signatory to the Hague Apostille Convention. In Canada, our equivalent process is called authentication and legalization.

What is document authentication and legalization?

Document authentication and legalization is a process where your Canadian documents receive multiple stamps and signatures. You need these stamps and signatures so that your documents will be recognized in another country.

The process involves document authentication at Global Affairs Canada in Ottawa and then legalization at the Embassy or Consulate of your destination country.

Global Affairs Canada and each Embassy or Consulate have very specific rules for Canadian document authentication and legalization. You should find out these rules in advance or hire a service like ours that specializes in document authentication and legalization.
