What is Apostille Certification?

“Apostille certification” is the term used to describe the process of having a document certified so it will be accepted in a foreign jurisdiction. After a document has been apostilled, it will be recognized in every country that has signed the Hague Apostille Convention. However, Canada is not a signatory to the Hague Apostille Convention, and therefore it is not possible to obtain apostille certification in Canada. The Canadian equivalent to the international apostille process is called document authentication and legalization. If you have been told that you need to obtain a Canadian apostille certificate, what you will actually be doing is authenticating and legalizing your document.

About the Apostille Certification Process

In Canada, getting an apostille certificate typically has three steps:

Step 1 involves preparing your documents, which may include having the document notarized by a Canadian Notary Public, having a certified true copy made, or having the documents translated if they are not in English or French.

Step 2 involves having your documents authenticated by Global Affairs Canada or an authorized provincial body.

Step 3 involves having your document legalized at the appropriate embassy or consulate.
