When you need to provide your Canadian documents to an authority in Romania, they will commonly request an apostille.

What is an Apostille?

Under the Hague Apostille Convention, signatory countries of this treaty have agreed to recognize public documents issued by other signatory countries, providing those documents are authenticated by the attachment of an internationally recognized form of authentication known as an “apostille“. An apostille ensures that public documents issued in one signatory country will be recognized as valid or legal in all other signatory countries.

Although Romania is a signatory to this Hague Convention, Canada is not. The equivalent Canadian process is called authentication and legalization.

What is authentication and legalization?

The authentication and legalization process for Canadian documents to be used in Romania involves two main steps. The first step is authentication at Global Affairs Canada in Ottawa. The second step is legalization at the Embassy of Romania.

Recently, the Embassy of Romania has removed the requirement for consular fees relating to the legalization of Canadian documents. They now perform legalization of Canadian documents free of charge.

As Canada’s leading authentication and legalization, or apostille service, we would be happy to handle the process and answer your questions. Call us toll free at 1-888-433-1011, or complete a Request Info form.
