There are many reasons why you may be asked for the authentication and legalization of Canadian documents for use in Russia. It may be for business, work, study, or citizenship purposes.

Do you have Canadian documents for use in Russia?

If you have Canadian documents that will be used in Russia, they will need to be authenticated at Global Affairs Canada and legalized by a diplomatic mission of Russia in Canada.

The first thing to consider is how to properly prepare your documents. For example, if you have vital statistics documents, such as a birth or marriage certificate, you will need the original long-form certificate that was issued by the province. If you have a criminal record check issued by a local police station in Canada, it will need to be notarized in order to meet the criteria of the process. Corporate documents, such as a Certificate of Residency or Articles of Incorporation, must also be notarized by a Canadian Notary Public.

What are the legalization requirements of the Embassy of Russia?

The legalization requirements for Canadian documents at the Embassy of Russia are quite strict. In general, they only accept original Canadian documents. There are supporting documents that must also be submitted along with your original documents, such as an application form, letter of authorization if you are using an agent, and a notarized passport copy.

You may also review the requirements listed on the Embassy of Russia website.

The Consulate General of Russia in Toronto has been temporarily closed.  At this time, there is no indication of when or if it will re-open. Canadian documents originating from all provinces, except Quebec, will now fall under the jurisdiction of the Embassy of Russia in Ottawa. Documents that originate from Quebec will be processed at the Consulate General of Russia in Montreal.
