Does the Embassy require the original documents?
Many Embassies will require that you submit original Canadian documents for legalization. This can be specific to certain types of documents, such as vital statistics documents. However, there are a few Embassies and Consulates that only accept original documents.
Some Embassies and Consulate will accept copies of documents if prepared correctly. Typically, these are certified true copies of documents that have been prepared by a Canadian Notary Public.
Does the Embassy require Authentication, and if so, from the Federal or Provincial offices?
Most Embassies will require that your documents are authenticated before they will legalize them. The authentication is typically done by Global Affairs Canada in Ottawa. However, there are some consulates across Canada they will accept provincial authentication. Since each diplomatic mission is unique, it is recommended to confirm these requirements in advance.
Are there any other supporting documents required by the Embassy?
It is quite common for an Embassy to require very specific supporting documents. These supporting documents can be extensive in some cases. These requirements may include application forms, letters of authorization, passport copies, or articles of incorporation.
The specific supporting document requirements of the intended Embassy or Consulate should be confirmed well in advance.
