Moving abroad – How to get your Canadian documents recognized in your destination country

Document Authentication and Legalization for Canadian Expats

Moving abroad is exciting! However, taking care of all the details involved can be overwhelming and confusing. Getting your important Canadian documents officially recognized in the country you are moving to can be especially frustrating and difficult, as most people have no idea where to start.  This article briefly describes the process of having Canadian documents officially recognized abroad and points you towards additional information and assistance.

What is the term apostille?

In Canada, the process of having your Canadian documents officially recognized in another country is called document apostille. Other countries have different terms for this process, including legalization and document attestation, but these terms all refer to the same process.

Documents destined for non-apostille signatory countries will need to go through an additional step of diplomatic legalization. More information about the document legalization process can be found here: About Document Legalization

How do I get an apostille?

The apostille process involves having your document properly prepared. This may include obtaining a new document or having the document notarized. Next, the document is submitted to the appropriate apostille office in the country of origin.

While this process is theoretically straightforward, the reality is a lot more frustrating. Every country has unique rules and regulations about the preparation and apostille process, and it can be difficult to source the right information.
