- Alberta – ATIA
- British Colombia – STIBC
- Manitoba – ATIM
- Ontario – ATIO
- Quebec – OTTIAQ
- Saskatchewan – ATIS
- New Brunswick – CTINB
- Nova Scotia – ATINE
- Prince Edward Island – CTIC
- Newfoundland and Labrador – CTIC

- Northwest Territories – CTIC
What is a certified translator?
A “certified translator” is a translator that has qualified and registered with the provincial association of translators in their province. Once certified, the translator gains the ability to add the provincial association’s seal to their translations, along with their signature.
Why do you need to use a certified translator?
There are a few reasons why you would need to use a certified translator. First, to ensure the accuracy of the translation by using a translator who is certified in that language combination. Second, if you need the translation to support the apostille process, the translation must be done by a certified translator from Canada. Third, it can be required of the embassy or consulate of the destination country (if the destination country is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention).
If the translation will be presented to Global Affairs Canada or a provincial apostille authority for an apostille, or to support a foreign language document being apostilled, it must be certified by a Canadian Certified Translator.
What is the apostille process?
The apostille process allows your Canadian documents to be recognized in another country. The process involves submitting your documents to the appropriate apostille office in Canada where they will apply the apostille, verifying the authenticity of the document or signature contained therein. And in some cases, the document must go for legalization at the embassy or consulate of your destination country.
It is important to research the requirements in advance, or use a professional service like IDC to handle the process on your behalf.
