Although you have many exciting details to plan for your wedding, you will first need to apostille your documents for marriage in Belarus.
What is an Apostille?
Under the Hague Apostille Convention, signatory countries of this treaty have agreed to recognize public documents issued by other signatory countries, providing those documents are authenticated by the attachment of an internationally recognized form of authentication known as an “apostille“. An apostille ensures that public documents issued in one signatory country will be recognized as valid or legal in all other signatory countries.
Canada is not a signatory to this Hague Apostille Convention. The similar and appropriate process in Canada is called authentication and legalization.
What is Authentication and Legalization?
Authentication and legalization is a process in Canada that allows documents to be used abroad. It is most commonly a two-step process where the signatures on the document are verified and additional signatures and stamps are added at each step. Additional steps may be required depending on the type of documents you have and the requirements of the destination country.
How can IDC help apostille your documents for marriage in Belarus?
Having your Canadian documents authenticated and legalized for Belarus will involve three steps. First, order and prepare your documents. Next, authenticate the documents at Global Affairs Canada. Last, the documents must be legalized at the Embassy of Belarus.
Documents required to get married in Belarus:
· Notarized single status affidavit
· Statement in Lieu of Certification of Non-impediment to Marriage Abroad
· Marriage search (notarized if from Ontario)
· Divorce certificate (if applicable)
You can handle the process yourself if you are not in a rush and you have done your research. You should know that if done by mail, the process can take up to six weeks. By attending each office in person, we can reduce the processing time to less than a week.
